Public Market: Foltz Family Market

I was downtown for a program at the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN) and decided to grab some food at the Milwaukee Public Market. I saw something about a place that was supposed to have a decent burger. The online information said that they were only doing online and phone orders. Thankfully, they were very present and taking orders at the Foltz Family Market. Mostly a butcher shop but also a restaurant and bar! (I'll mention that later)

I wasn't sure what to expect. They seem to be good at pizza too. Not always a partnership with a good burger. I ordered the "Classic Burger" with cheddar. No fries. I paid for the burger and slid over to the bar to wait. Before the burger arrived, I had ordered a Jack n Coke. My favorite combo. The cocktail was fairly inexpensive for a "call" mixer. How about the burger, right? Well, I looked at it and thought, pretzel bun. Did I miss that in the description. I'm not a big fan of the pretzel bun. That's how they serve it, that's how I'm eating it. First bite. Wow! Flavor(s) just bursting out. The surprise flavor, arugula. Combined with the tomato and creamy cheddar cheese, it works well. The pretzel roll actually made it happen. Stiff yet soft inside with a heavier texture. Yum.

This is ranking in one of my favorite burgers of 2023 if not all time. The flavors were on point. The fresh from the butcher beef, juicy and flavorful. Priced right.

Holiday Dinner at the Mason Street Grill (Pfister Hotel MKE)

Keeping with tradition, a group of us headed to the Mason Street Grill for dinner after a showing of "A Christmas Carol" at the beautiful Pabst Theater in downtown Milwaukee. I'm always temped to order something different off the menu but once I see their burger listed, I can't help myself. A restaurant known for top level meat and fish will very often have an excellent burger. Also, I know for a fact they do a burger justice. (Previous blog 12.11.2021)

The Mason Street Grill is such a great setting for a special dinner outing. The staff is usually hustling around making sure everything is on point. It's the kind of place you feel like you should be dressed a bit more formal. Not tuxedos but make sure your shirt has a collar and if you do wear jeans, make sure they don't look like you schlepp around the house in them.

I ordered the Mason Street Grill Burger, a 10 oz. Black Angus Chuck and Sirloin, Honey Glazed Onions, Muenster Cheese, House Relish. Still priced at $18 and served with fries. I ordered medium as I often do. No fear of the meat being a bit pink at this level. The food arrived. I cut the burger in half to check the insides. Pretty decent. I was psyched. A small pinch off the side to test the meat without all the stuff, okay. The overall flavor of the combined cheese, relish and onions was pretty good. I felt like the seasoning on the burger may have been too heavy. The meat didn't have the charbroiled flavor. Hmm. The roll was fresh and soft.

Rate it: 4 of 5

I don't think it's as good as it used to be. Still, it's one of the better burgers I've had. Returning to places can sometimes be a let down. Sort of like a sequel. Priced at $18 it should be a bit above the others.

Cary Ale House serves a "Smash" Burger (and I liked it!) 09/08/23

I'm not sure if I've ever had a "smashed" burger or at least it may not have been referred to as such. No matter, I was pleasantly surprised.

We traveled to Crystal Lake IL for an Oldsmobile car show at the Holiday Inn. We always like to get a group of Olds club members and check out some local eats. There's a place in Cary, IL that fit the bill. They've got a little of everything Fish, Ham, BBQ and Burgers. I chose the Smash Burger, A double patty pressed thin, with smashed onions, chipotle remoulade, house pickles, candied bacon, butter lettuce and American cheese. I had no idea what I ordered but man, I'm glad I did.

The whole sandwich just fit together perfect. Enough of everything listed but not of it excessive. Flavor, spot on. Juicy patties, fresh bun.

I don't know why but this really hit the spot. Overall flavor worked so well.

09/07/22-Sister from another mother birthday outing @ Double Bs BBQ/MKE BBQ

It was time to go out and celebrate my sister-in-law Therese's birthday. Being the considerate person she is, she chose a place that offered a lot of choices, including burgers! That's pretty cool.

I've been to BB BBQ before for the BBQ. It was delicious. So I figured the burger might be as good. I was right. My order was the 1/2 Fresh Angus Burger w/Cheese. I had American. They describe it like this: A fresh, lightly pressed, char-broiled patty, served on a toasted brioche bun with your choice of cheese: American, Mild Cheddar, Swiss, or Pepper-jack.I describe it like this: Yummy! If you read any of my posts on this blog you will find I'm not a big fan of the Brioche bun. In this case, it worked out well. The flavor complimented the burger instead of detracting. The burger itself could have been just a little less cooked. Still it was moist and flavorful. No need for all kinds of extra stuff loaded on. I did have raw onions and added a bit of ketchup and stone ground Düsseldorf mustard. Fries were the side.

Relatively inexpensive according to today's pricing. Delicious. I don't know if I will go back for the burger specifically because they do so well with the BBQ. Great atmosphere.

Rate it: 4 of 5 Price and quality are a value. Atmosphere adds to it.

Sorry, I don't have a picture of the sandwich. :(

Here's their menu

Baja Not "Ah Ha" (09.13.2021)

It's a cool day along the California coast. I'm down in Newport Beach for some sun and fun with my wife and my stepmother, Nancy. The weather was a bit on the cool side but a guy from Wisconsin doesn't complain about a cooler day at the beach.

We had enough sun and thought it was time for a bite. We walked the beach front in search of the Rockin Baja Lobster. They serve what I'd call Mexican Fusion. According to the website, the restaurant(s) have a menu inspired by trips to the Baja.

While the Mexican food sounded delicious and the plates plentiful, I had to check out the burger. I've been told so many times not to order a burger at a Taco place. I would normally do so but the images and my need to find a decent burger in an unexpected venue makes me go for it every time.

The "Rockin Works" is a ½ Lb. Angus Beef Patty, Cheddar Cheese, Grilled Onions, Applewood Bacon, Dill Pickle, Lettuce, & Boom Boom Sauce. Boom Sauce? What the heck. The photo looked great. I also saw one in person on someone else's plate.

I needed to cut it in half because of all the stuff on it as well as the fact it was a half pounder. The burger was juicy, cooked the way I like it but overall the flavors just didn't work. I stripped it back a bit to get a taste of the burger on it's own. Decent, not awesome.

Rate it: 3.5 of 5

$16 seems like a lot of cash for a burger from a casual place until I remember that I'm in California, Newport Beach specifically. I don't think the bun was much to speak of. The patty, juicy with some seasoning. The sandwich relies heavily on the Boom Sauce and all the other stuff loaded on.

(Not my burger. Image was taken from their website.)

Burger with my brother from another mother (09/11/2021)

Burger with my brother from another mother (09/11/2021)

Here's something you might not know about me... my name is Dan, I have a half brother in California. His name is Dan also. California Dan knows that I'm all about the burger. When he found out that my wife and I would be visiting he thought he'd give himself a challenge to cook a burger even Dasburgereater (me) might enjoy. Tall order.

His focus was intense. Everything was fresh and hand picked by him. No room for error. His counter top had perfectly cut tomatoes, onions etc. The patties, well they looked just right. My guess, 1/3 pounders. CA Dan uses a gas grill. I only harassed him a little about that. You still need to be on your game when it comes to timing. The seasoning will still shine.

Did they turn out? Sure did. Juicy, flavorful with just the right amount of everything on it. I did have to cut it in half because it was just that big!

Rate it: 4.5 of 5

CA Dan stepped up to the plate and hit a home run. There was no doubt. Was it the love and care added? Was I influenced by his charm? Maybe it's his name that got me? It was one of the best homemade burgers I've had. You know I've had plenty.

I ordered a burger, go figure. (07.15.2021)

The English Inn is a Supper Club in Fish Creek Wisconsin. They are known for their Beef Wellington and other high end dishes. What did I order? A burger! I loved the reaction of the two ladies seated near us when I ordered the Burger Platter. Hey, I figure that if they can do meat right, their burger should be good.

I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I didn't get the usual questions about onions (fried or raw?) or what type of cheese I would like. No matter, they know what they are doing. I hoped.

The burger arrived. And that is all there was. I was a bit taken back. Really? Just a cheeseburger on a bun? No tomato, onion, lettuce or pickle. Weird. Should I ask for toppings? I figured I would try it before going that route. First bite, wow. Tons of flavor. Maybe I don't need toppings. I did put some ketchup on it. Really surprising how good it tasted "as is". Juicy and seasoned well. The bun to burger ratio was right. Small bun with a big burger.

Decent burger. Bun was a bit dry. Price was disproportionate ($18) Still puzzled about the toppings etc.

Wait, a Patty Melt? that's not a burger!-Birchwood, Up North (08.2019)

A Fall tradition, pulling the pier out for the season. It's one of those events you don't look forward to for a couple of reasons. It's a lot of work and it also means that the warm season in Wisconsin is coming to an end. It's a family project.
Part of the day's events is lunch at the bar that's down the road a piece. The same place we go to pull the boats out. They have a boat launch that is public access.
We usually grab our favorite beverage, shoot some pool and grab a bite to eat. I usually get the burger. This time I thought I might try the Patty Melt. Why not? It' and open face burger on rye. (less carbs!) They always do right with their burgers and other food.
The melt arrives. Looks good. Tastes even better! Now I'm really glad I decided to go with the melt.

Dang good stuff. Funky place on a lake. Up North. Always great eats.

Raised Bar, Chicago IL

It was a super cold night in downtown Chicago. Windchill at -10 degrees. We had a room at the Marriot Renaissance for the night. In town for the Interpol concert at the Chicago Theater, across the street.
Most of the time, I wouldn't dine at the hotel restaurant just because the prices and a lot of times, the food is good but not worth the $$$.
Throw that one out the window! I'm glad we were afraid to go out in the cold to scavenge for mediocre food. Nice and warm with a view of downtown Chicago. During the warmer seasons, the rooftop is made available. We started with Edamame and a drink. I had a Tequila based "Old Fashioned" I plan to stick with Whiskey or Brandy in the future. The Edamame, something I've never had before was delicious. When it came time to order dinner the choice was clear, a burger. Grilled beef, smoked bourbon pork belly, pickled slaw and butterkase (cheese) on a seeded brioche bun. Presented beautifully and cooked perfectly. What a burger! I'm thinking this may have been one of the best I've had. At least the top five.

Forget the price. It wasn't that high anyway. What you get is worth it. I took part back to the room and warmed it up later, still delicious!

At the Shack 01.19.2018

It was Gallery Night in the 3rd Ward, Milwaukee. I was showing my work across the street from a somewhat recently opened Shake Shack.
I didn't want to go in alone but, my favorite sidekick, the wife wasn't available.
As I stood across the street looking in at the line formed three lanes wide, I asked myself. Is this a good idea? How long will this take. What should I get? Will they think I'm weird if I just want a cheeseburger?
I made the move. Walk signal gave me access to a crosswalk that can be difficult to navigate, at times, especially on Gallery Night. People and cars are distracted easily by the scene and fashion.
Once inside the restaurant (?) I took a quick look up and down the menu. Again, I had to ask myself why the same sandwich has to be called something so different. Well, a cheeseburger is just that.
The girl at the counter was very empathetic to my old school issue of a burger and cheeseburger being about all you had to contemplate.
I asked, "is there just a cheeseburger with tomato, lettuce and onion? Maybe not listed but, available.
My order went in at 7:26PM. I got it at around 7:36PM. For some reason, they give you one of those electronic devices that is supposed to notify you when you stuff done. Like Olive Garden. My thing didn't buzz but, the girl called my name over the din of the crowd.
I took my bag full of grub back across the street to a secluded space for consumption.
Bite number one. A lot of pickle, tomato and onion. The bun, delicious. Second bite, I decided to just pull a little beef off the sandwich. Pretty decent. I'm guessing it's not hand formed. Griddle top, frozen? Good flavor no matter. Third bite was from the combination of the bun, veggies and meat. Really good flavor, fresh veggies. I was surprised, I must say.
I think the crowd told the story. A lot of students, some families and people that just had an interest in what it was all about.
The numbers: 3.5+ of 5
Staff was very responsive, helpful and present. Not so normal for semi-fast food. The price, not bad but, for the final product, I'm not sure. Culver's, Kopp's etc can give me the same speed or faster and offer similar price and pace.
Still, I had fun watching the crowd.
I checked out the Wiki page. I like the story. At times I too think, I just want to be a funky guy blogging about burgers. Don't really care that much about how many people follow me etc. But, trust me, if I was approached by someone that said we can make this more than what it is, I might jump.
Fear this will never happen because at that point, I don't think it would be as fun.

Oscar's Pub & Grill. Steady taste.

11.20.2017
It was another night of "Burgers with Brothers", a new tradition that my brothers and I have decided is an important thing to do. There are going to be burgers but honestly, it's all about the three of us getting together with each other to catch up, hang out and share some time as brothers. So far, no spouses or children are invited.
The most recent outing was at Oscar's Pub & Grill, West Pierce St, Milwaukee.
The eldest of the three chose it.
For me it would be the third time. The past two times, very satisfied. Let's see what happened this time.
The place was hoppin' when we met up at 6PM on a Monday. There were a couple of drink specials listed on the white board. No burger specials. No problem, prices are decent anyway.

The burger choices went like this:
Younger-The Hongo (8 oz. Premium Black Angus Burger, Swiss Cheese, Sautéed Mushrooms) & Fries
Middle (me)-The White Gringo (8 oz. Premium Black Angus Burger, WI White Cheddar & American Cheese, Thick Hickory Smoked Bacon) & Onion Rings
Eldest-The Big "O"(8 oz. Premium Black Angus Burger, Chipotle Jack, Smoked Gouda, Hickory Bacon, Chorizo, Fried Onions, Jalapeños, Side of House Guacamole) & Sweet Potato Fries

All of us agreed that the burgers were cooked near perfect, fresh roll and all the sides were above par.

When we arrived the music was just background noise. A song by Pearl Jam came on and all of the sudden the volume went up! We mentioned to the waitress that it was a bit loud to talk over. A short time later, the basketball game sound was coming out of the sound system. Screeching shoes on a basketball court, right in our ears!

We wrapped up our conversation outside. Just some advice when choosing a table, avoid the speaker hanging in the corner of the bar area.

During nice weather, there is an outside deck that's a great place for larger groups.

Price is right on. Service better than ok. Great food. Fresh & relatively fast.
Noise level in the bar area is not suitable for conversation. (at least this night)
Although I said 4 of 5, it's a 4+. This may be my new "go to" burger. Very consistent.

Milwaukee Burger Co.

A Monday night in Milwaukee. Burgers with Brothers. I'm liking this burger outing thing.
This time, we celebrate my day. Dasburgereater turns one year older.
I've been wanting to get to the MKE Burger Co since they opened a couple of years ago. So, when it came my time to choose the joint, I went for it.
I chose the Bacon Bleu. Applewood smoked bacon, Pabst onions, sour cream and bleu cheese on top of the burger.
I was ready for this.
It arrived in all of it's glory. Well, not too glorious. It look nice and neat.
I cut it in half. Sauce oozed. First bite. I thought there was bleu cheese involved. Well, maybe the second bite. Nope. I could taste the sour cream plenty. The bacon was a bit too crispy for my liking.
Right, whining again. I can't just agree and say all is well in burger town.
Still, a decent burger overall. Maybe on a different day, it would scream bleu cheese.
The scene was a bit too sport bar with booths. We didn't sit on the patio. That might have been a bit noisy. The highway is just above the restaurant. Another distraction may have been the Home Depot blocking the view to the West.
In a different location, this might be a place to return to, just to test the theory about the cheese.
All the food was tasty. They may have been a bit scarce on the seasoning.
Our appetizer, Portobello Fries, was a decent portion. Again, seasoning was scarce.

4 of 5
Price, taste, scene were all at least about average. Location was a drawback.

Jake's Burger-Brookfield WI

I should really post in a more timely manor.
04/05/2017
Burgers with Brothers again. This time celebrating my brother Robb's day.
He called Jakes Burger in Brookfield. I still haven't figured out if it is related to the classic restaurant just over the hill from the burger spot.
No matter, I should stay on task.
Sticking with trying to get a "solid" taste for a place, I took the Classic. I didn't want to upset the cart by having a specialty sauce on the side. Just give me cheese, meat and a couple of vegetables. Right?
The restaurant was pretty cool/cozy. It is part of a strip of stores so, there was a chance it could be like a Starbuck's or something. I think the people did a nice job with the layout and interior.
I suppose I should cover the burger now.
From memory, it was really good. No fear of putting some seasoning on it. As for the medium rare, just a bit more rare than I prefer but, it didn't mess with me too much.
The brothers enjoyed their selections also.

4 of 5
Price was average for modern dining out. Burgers. Clean and cool scene. If I drank beer, I think this place would have made me happy. Like other burger restaurants these days, they also have "spiked" shakes! That could be fun!

I Got the Point. Point Burger Bar MKE/Pewaukee

Hey, I'm not sure if I've ever done a "double" review/post. I guess there's always a first time.
Time passes so quickly when Summer arrives in my part of the world. (WI)
Some time back, my two brothers and I decided to we would do something called "Burgers with Brothers"
It guarantees that we will at least get together three times a year, once for each birthday, as brothers to eat and talk. One in March, July and November. Burgers had to be the choice of food. We all love trying out new places and versions of the burger.
Point Burger Bar in Milwaukee, located at highway 45 and Good Hope Road was our first outing as the group.
My first choice was The Point Burger. Prime Angus, Sarvecchio Montamore Cheese, Nueske’s Bacon, Truffle Mayo, Brioche Bun.
I didn't end up getting it because the chef won't allow a "specialty" burger to go out with the Truffle Mayo on the side. I would need to Build My Own. Really?
So, I went with the Classic. Prime Angus, American Cheese, Lettuce, Onion, Tomato, Pickle Chips, Kaiser Bun.
I'm a Medium Rare kinda guy. Just a little pink. No pink in this one. Still, it wasn't a dry piece of meat. Pretty decent overall.
I was still a bit put off by the chef's request.
08.13.2017
Fast forward to just last Sunday.
It's my great nephew's birthday. They choose Point Burger Bar, Pewaukee. Partially because there is an indoor go-cart track in the same building and a full blown game room!
I went with the Au Poivre. Prime Angus, Blue Cheese, Cracked Black Pepper, Green Peppercorn Mayo, Onion Bun
Again, a little to well done for my taste. The fries were greasier than I recall from the previous visit in Spring.
I'm not going to tell a person not to go to Point Burger Bar because I think they do a decent burger. I guess I'm not a fan of the BYO, Sports Bar, large venue.

I'm being nice because I think I'm letting my feelings skew things.
4 of 5
Average price for modern dining out, especially burgers. The food is good. Most all the people enjoyed what they ordered. Onion string appetizer was huge. Very accommodating for the party group.

Fontina in Foenix

As part of our family's vacation in the Phoenix area Wednesday was scheduled as a spa day for the girls and a visit to Desert Valley Auto Parts and a burger at Joe's Farm Grill for the guys.
My nails looked fine.
Joe's was recommended by a friend from Waukesha WI. They saw it on Diners, Dives and Drive Inns.
I never heard of Fontina cheese before I saw it listed on the menu at Joe's.
The description read like this:
6 oz., roasted red pepper, grilled mushrooms, field greens, farm made pecan pesto and imported fontina cheese
Wow, what a combo. If the burger is good to great, these flavors are going to make it outstanding.
The place was packed when we got there. Maybe not too surprising, it was around 1:15PM. Upside of a crowd, fresh food!
We put in our orders and then took a seat outside in the little grove of trees out back of the restaurant. The farm was our back drop.
A short time later, the buzzer went off. Time to find out.
Fries and onion rings looked excellent. The burger, stacked and beautiful. I snitched  a piece of just burger off the one side. Mmm. Pretty tasty. A little overcooked for my liking but, seasoned nicely. As I thought, the flavors all really came together.
The price was a bit steep but, it's really fresh everything. I won't pick at it too much. The staff was very helpful. They seemed to understand that not everyone has been to Joe's before. The outside area was clean and really just a great place to sit and take in the scene.

4 of 5.
Price and a little too done had an effect on my rating.

Gallery Nite and Rumpus, a new tradition (01.20.2017)

I swear, each time I go to the Rumpus Room, the burger gets better.
Taste, texture and color are spot on.
Maybe the idea of a Friday night in downtown Milwaukee just before heading out for yet another Gallery Night in the 3rd Ward makes it that much better. No clue.
All I know, the venue, staff and food keep me coming back.
Only one suggestion, for the staff, don't put a large group next to a couple at a small table if there are other tables open.
4 of 5 or better.
Price is still within the range for this kind of dining.

Okay, I Got the Point. (Point Burger Bar)

03/28/2016
I've been wanting to get out to the Point Burger Bar since I found out that Point Brewing was planning to open at the Park Place location.
Is it a Burger Bar? or a bar that has burgers? I'm going with a Burger Bar. They have quite the selection. Some of the basics, with their naming. Then there's Duck, Lamb, Turkey, Veggie, Bison and Salmon. That could be fun, I guess. It is supposed to be and upscale eatery/bar.
I came in thinking go basic to get the "real" flavor. Upon looking at the menu I decided maybe I should get the one that bears the name, Point Burger ($13.95) Prime Angus, Sarvecchio Montamore Cheese, Nuke’s Bacon, Truffle Mayo, Brioche Bun. Would I be considered out of line to say, I'm sick of the word Brioche. So, order I did. I requested to have the Truffle Mayo on the side. "You can't do that, you will need to Build Your Own Burger." Really? I'm paying $14 for a burger, put the sauce on the side! Well, I got the Classic (Prime Angus, American Cheese, Lettuce, Onion, Tomato, Kaiser Bun) because I didn't want to fill out a card explaining my preferences. Did you see that the "Classic" is served on a Kaiser roll. Hmm.
When it arrived, I was pleased to see that the meat was cooked just right, a little pink. Not terribly appealing appearance-wise. Sort of looked too formed. Flavor was good. The cook wasn't afraid to use some spices. Cheese was a bit lacking for flavor.
I'm not going to complain about particular things. It was cooked how I like it. Seasoning was good. Roll seemed fresh as did the tomato, red onions and lettuce.
The decor wasn't much to write about. The wall covered with kegs was pretty cool. I think they might cozy it up a bit. Totally my taste.
Rate it: 3.5 of 5
Not bad. Not mind blowing. Price is within the modern restaurant burger range. I'm already on record for whining about what we get for $10 these days. Service was a mixed bag. When she was at our table, she seemed attentive.
I might go back. It might be a while because more of these burger joints are opening around town. Financially and caloric-ally difficult to get to all of them.

Out for fun. Burgers of the common kind.

I won't try to convince you that this post will change the way that you seek your burger fix. What it might do is make it a bit more obvious how my burger addiction is real.

Most recently, I had a burger at the Polish Center of Wisconsin, Franklin WI. $3! Hard to believe that you can buy anything for that much. It reminded me of the burgers we used to get at my Junior High School lunch room. Not bad but let me put it this way, relative to the price.

I was at John's Sandwich Shop a couple of Mondays back. I thought I would change it up a bit. So I ordered a Patty Melt. Rye bread, not a bun. Different, right? Pretty darn good. John's is a throw back kind of place. The prices are slowly catching up with the rest of the folks but they still keep it real.

Here's a good one. In Milwaukee we have Pizza Man Pizzerias. Yep, got a burger at a pizza joint. What's wrong with me? I have to say, they do a decent burger. I admit, they pizza was better. I did a trade/share with my wife just because the pizza looked so delicious.

So, now you're up to speed with my recent adventures. One of my goals will be to go for a burger at the Milwaukee Burger Company.

Parkside 23-Anniversary dinner

Parkside 23 is one of those places I've been wanting to go to for some time. The curb appeal is really something. Outdoor seating wasn't an option because it was cool with a chance of rain. Maybe next time.
You already know how classy I am so, this won't be too surprising... I went for dinner with my wife to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary and had a burger. (Loser!) She's cool with that. Actually, it might put some flags up if I didn't order a burger.
The menu has quite a few interesting dishes to order. Brats, bacon & mac. How good does that sound? Maybe it should be on a burger?
It's always best to go with the basics. Parkside really only offers one burger. Simply called "Burger with cheese". That is fine with me. I won't have to take away all the extra stuff to get to the meat.
The burger arrives. Fresh fries (peel on potato) bun shining from a buttery touch, vegetable accessories on the side-tomato, pickle, lettuce. A little cup of ketchup on the side. I ordered medium rare with cheddar. It was a little more towards rare but, not a lot.
I cut a little chunk to get the taste. Nice. Butter, onions and seasoned without fear. I tried the onions by them self, exceptional. All of the flavor came together when I added the tomato and lettuce (both very fresh and crisp)
4 of 5
Price was relative to modern pricing on burgers, scene was okay-we had a corner table, a little more private

3 Burger Weekend (or as I call it heaven!)

It wasn't my intention to have three different burgers in one weekend but, let me tell you how it happened.
Junior's Custard Milwaukee, WI
Hunger and nostalgia drove the first burger. Now called Junior's Custard, the food stand that's been at the intersection of 60th & Appleton Avenue in Milwaukee has been a custard stand serving Jumbo Burgers since 1950 when Elsa & Karl Kopp opened their first stand. Will Junior's deliver the same quality Jumbo burger? I had to find out. The lot was empty when I arrived. I thought maybe they weren't open yet. The menu is quite different than the days when it was Kopp's or Robert's. Chicken, Fish, Gyros, Rubens etc. I went straight for the classic, Jumbo cheeseburger. When it arrived, I so ready to eat it. I sat in my car and had the first bite. Pretty decent. I wasn't having the nostalgic taste bud reaction that I thought I would. It was different. Was it because of all the anticipation? I decided to wait until I got to a place where I could sit and just enjoy it. Not much of a difference. The burger was okay. The bun, a bit dry. The seasoning was alright but didn't really do much for over all flavor.
2.5 of 5
Price was fair. Restaurant was clean and staff was pleasant. Not amazed with burger. Actually not as Jumbo as I recalled.

Trocadero Milwaukee, WI
The next experience was truly unexpected. Dinner and the theater. We decided that Trocadero, Milwaukee would be a nice place to dine at. Their menu offered choices for all of us. Little did I know, they had a burger on the menu. Was I silly to order a burger at a place that serves Sordfish or Marengo Chicken & Lobster sandwiches? Not at all. Everybody knows that I've passed up some delicious menu items to test the burger. No regrets. The cook/chef wasn't afraid to season the patty or to cook it to near perfect for my likings. My choice, Au Poivre Burger.

Pricy, Excellent flavor, Not embarrassing to eat a burger while others have the fancy stuff.

Within 24 hours, I was sitting for the third and final burger experience of the weekend.

Red Dot Wauwatosa, WI
I went straight for the Classic with cheese. I've been to Red Dot for a burger before. It was quite good. (will I have to look at my own blog?) This was per-meditated. I came seeking a burger. A burger I got. Simple and tasty.
